Carried Moccasins in order to be able to walk

silently and help his fellow soldiers to

rationalize their own unfortunate actions.

Kiowa went everwhere with the illustrated New Testament that his dad mailed him as a birthday present in January went he was at war.

Kiowa died drown under a muck of a sewage field carrying his lieutenant.

Would carried his grandfather's hunting hatchet

"You don't mess with churches.''(Pg.119)

"...I do like churches. The way it feels inside. It feels good when you just sit there, like you're in a forest and everything really quiet, except there's still this sound you can't hear." (Pg. 122)

I know what it is like to be afraid

take a high leap into the dark

rain falls without stop

erasing identities

transforming men

to a single soldier

War drags men to the very edge

desperate, hollow feeling

timeless drudgery, endless pressure

Confusion, misery and apprehension

replacing it with the unknown

Pete Seeger- waisted in the big muddy

It was back in nineteen forty-two,
I was a member of a good platoon.
We were on maneuvers in-a Loozianna,
One night by the light of the moon.
The captain told us to ford a river,
That's how it all begun.
We were -- knee deep in the Big Muddy,
But the big fool said to push on.

The Sergeant said, "Sir, are you sure,
This is the best way back to the base?"
"Sergeant, go on! I forded this river
'Bout a mile above this place.
It'll be a little soggy but just keep slogging.
We'll soon be on dry ground."
We were -- waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool said to push on.

The Sergeant said, "Sir, with all this equipment
No man will be able to swim."
"Sergeant, don't be a Nervous Nellie,"
The Captain said to him.
"All we need is a little determination;
Men, follow me, I'll lead on."
We were -- neck deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool said to push on.

All at once, the moon clouded over,
We heard a gurgling cry.
A few seconds later, the captain's helmet
Was all that floated by.
The Sergeant said, "Turn around men!
I'm in charge from now on."
And we just made it out of the Big Muddy
With the captain dead and gone.

We stripped and dived and found his body
Stuck in the old quicksand.
I guess he didn't know that the water was deeper
Than the place he'd once before been.
Another stream had joined the Big Muddy
'Bout a half mile from where we'd gone.
We were lucky to escape from the Big Muddy
When the big fool said to push on.

Well, I'm not going to point any moral;
I'll leave that for yourself
Maybe you're still walking, you're still talking
You'd like to keep your health.
But every time I read the papers
That old feeling comes on;
We're -- waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool says to push on.

Waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool says to push on.
Waist deep in the Big Muddy
And the big fool says to push on.
Waist deep! Neck deep! Soon even a
Tall man'll be over his head, we're
Waist deep in the Big Muddy!
And the big fool says to push on!

BLOOD AND TEARS

All have paid with blood and tears
To make this country free
All have paid with blood and tears
To make it the way it needs to be
All have paid with blood and tears
To do what they thought was right
All have paid with blood and tears
To hold nothing back and continue to fight
All have paid with blood and tears
To make it as it is today
All have paid with blood and tears
To do their best, at any cost, in each and every way.

Dear Father,

Father, I want to really thank you for my birthday present, I have receive the illustrated New Testament in January, I don’t go anywhere without it I always carried with me. Here in war things are getting bad. Soldiers are dying, I have never been more scared in my life. My believe for the promise of salvation under Jesus Christ has being present this whole time and it is what gives me hope  in this war. Last week my friend Jimmy killed a vietnamese soldier it was a young man coming out of the fog, he felt guilty, I waited by his side and told him it wasn’t his fault the man was dead, he had no choice he had to do it because this was war. I have talk to the soldiers about the importance of talking about one’s problems and traumatic experiences.  I would be coming home soon and attend to your sunday schools. Take care father.

            Your Son, Kiowa
